Williams was released by West Bromwich Albion when he was just a teenager. He played non-league football with Hednesford Town, before becoming professional at Stockport County, where he was later named their captain. In 352 games in which he played, he recorded 14 goals in the league for Swansea. He was instrumental in helping to achieve the Football League Cup and gain their promotion to the Premier League.
